Middletown Township Tree Permit Requirements
Middletown adopted its Tree Removal and Replacement requirements in 2024 (Ord. 2024-3446) as part of the township's stormwater chapter under the NJDEP MS4 mandate (N.J.A.C. 7:8); a separate Chapter 220 (Tree Maintenance, 2020) governs roadside and right-of-way trees. Tree removal applications are submitted to and approved by the Zoning Department (Planning, Zoning and Community Development) through the online portal before any removal, there is no separate shade tree commission review. Street trees under 2.5 inches, shade trees under 24 inches, and evergreens under 10 feet are exempt from replacement, and small residential lots are exempt from shade-tree, but not street-tree, replacement.
