Professional Stump Grinding in Central New Jersey

Pro-Stump Tree Service is named after what we do best — grinding stumps. Based in Millstone Township, we've served Central New Jersey homeowners for 38 years, eliminating stumps that other companies leave behind. Our fleet includes three professional-grade stump grinders: a compact 25-inch-wide unit that fits through standard 36-inch backyard gates, a mid-size track machine for slopes and soft ground, and a full-size 72-HP grinder that reduces 48-inch stumps to sawdust in under 30 minutes.

We grind every stump 6 to 12 inches below grade (18 inches for replanting), backfill with clean wood chip grindings, and leave the area ready for grass seed, sod, or a new tree. Whether you have one stump from yesterday's removal or 20 stumps on a property you just purchased, Pro-Stump Tree Service handles it — no stump is too big, too old, or too awkward to reach.

Safety & Insurance

Every stump grinding job begins with a NJ 811 call to mark underground utilities. Our operators wear full PPE including face shields, hearing protection, and steel-toe boots. Flying debris barriers are placed around the work zone to protect bystanders and vehicles.

Pro vs. DIY

Why Stump Grinding Beats DIY or Chemical Removal

Homeowners sometimes try potassium nitrate stump removers or diesel fuel burns — both are slow (6 to 12 months), unreliable, and potentially dangerous. Renting a consumer-grade grinder from a home center gives you a 13-HP machine with dull teeth that bounces off hardwood stumps. Professional stump grinders operate at 72 HP with carbide-tipped cutting teeth that are sharpened before every job.

The result: a 30-inch oak stump that takes a rental grinder 3 frustrating hours is done in 15 minutes with our equipment. You also avoid the risk of hitting buried utility lines — we call NJ 811 before every job and wait for underground markings before grinding.

Had 8 stumps ground in one morning. The yard looks like they were never there. Incredible equipment.

After the Grind

What Happens Below the Surface

After grinding, the remaining root system loses its energy source and begins decomposing naturally over 3 to 7 years. Roots do not regrow or send up new shoots once the stump is removed below grade. The grinding process produces a pile of wood chip material roughly 3 to 4 wheelbarrows per 30-inch stump.

These chips make excellent garden mulch, or we backfill the hole and mound the grindings slightly above grade to account for settling. Within 6 to 8 weeks, the area is level and ready for seeding. Most homeowners cannot tell where the stump was by the following spring.

02

Below-Grade Grinding Standard

Every stump is ground 6 to 12 inches below the soil surface — deep enough for sod, seed, or garden beds. We go to 18 inches for customers replanting a tree in the same spot.

03

Multiple stumps on the same property receive automatic per-stump discounts. The more stumps we grind in one visit, the lower your per-unit cost.

04

NJ 811 Utility Marking Included

We call 811 and wait for underground utility markings before grinding. Gas lines, irrigation pipes, and buried electric cables are identified and avoided.

05

Clean, Level Finish

The hole is backfilled with wood chip grindings, mounded to account for settling, and the surrounding area is raked clean. No mess, no ruts, no damage to your lawn.

06

Same-Day Service with Tree Removal

When paired with a tree removal, we bring the grinder on the same truck and eliminate the stump before we leave — saving you a second service call.

Step by Step

How We Handle Stump Grinding

1

Stump Assessment

We measure the stump diameter, check for buried utilities with 811 markings, and determine which grinder fits your access.

2

Area Preparation

Rocks, dirt, and debris around the stump base are cleared. Nearby plants are protected with plywood shields.

3

Grinding

The grinder removes the stump 6 to 12 inches below grade in a systematic side-to-side pattern. Surface roots within 12 inches of the stump are ground as well.

4

Backfill & Grade

The hole is backfilled with the wood chip grindings, mounded slightly to account for settling. Excess grindings are spread or hauled away per your preference.
