Pro-Stump Tree Service

Point Pleasant, NJ

The trees of Point Pleasant reflect the unique character of this Ocean County borough. From the Red Oak lining older residential streets to the Red Maple in newer developments, each species presents distinct maintenance needs that require an arborist who knows the local landscape, not just how to run a chainsaw.

Pro-Stump has served the 23,707 residents here since 1987, with fast response times for both scheduled work and storm emergencies. Every job is overseen by founder Glenn Donnelly, with decades of experience working Ocean County's specific soil types, weather patterns, and tree species.

Waterfront & Barrier-Beach Tree Challenges

Lakehurst sand soils, mature hardwood canopies, and seasonal storm exposure create a specific set of tree hazards across Point Pleasant. These are the conditions our NJ Licensed Tree Expert (#200988) and ISA Certified Arborist encounter and address on local properties.

The Manasquan River forms the northern boundary of Point Pleasant Borough — waterfront properties along the river and the Point Pleasant Canal (Intracoastal Waterway, with lift bridges at Route 88 and Bridge Avenue) get accelerated salt-spray damage on pines, oaks, and maples that inland lots don't see

Point Pleasant Beach is a barrier-town borough on the Barnegat Peninsula — direct Atlantic exposure limits viable species to eastern red cedar, Japanese black pine, London plane, holly, and bayberry. Beach-block trees fail differently than mainland Borough trees

Sandy hit Point Pleasant Beach hard on October 29, 2012 — Wikipedia documents that nearly 2,800 feet of the boardwalk was destroyed and repairs were estimated up to $2 million. Twelve years later, mature street trees along the boardwalk-approach blocks and the Old Coast Guard Station corridor are still showing crown decline from that saturation

Chapter 13's per-tree fines in Point Pleasant Borough ($250 first offense, $500 subsequent) raise the stakes on any waterfront work — arborist documentation before removal, not after

Point Pleasant Beach's Shade Tree Commission reviews every application and meets only once a month (1st Monday, 7 p.m.) — plan your removal timing around that calendar or you'll sit on a quote for weeks

Emerald ash borer has finished off most mature ash canopy along Route 35 and Route 88; dead ash gets brittle inside 18 months, so what looked healthy last spring is a sectional-dismantle job this fall

The Jenkinson's Aquarium and Boardwalk corridor is a working tourist economy — tree work along Ocean Avenue, Central Avenue, and Bay Avenue needs seasonal scheduling (avoid Memorial Day through Labor Day peak) and clean staging

Why this matters in Point Pleasant: Under New Jersey's Tree Expert and Tree Care Operators Licensing Act (N.J.S.A. 45:15C-13 et seq., adopted 2010), it is unlawful to advertise or perform tree care services for compensation without an LTE license. Hiring an unlicensed tree service exposes property owners to liability and may void homeowner's insurance claims if damage or injury occurs. Pro-Stump's NJ LTE #200988 (Glenn Donnelly) and LTCO #767797 are both publicly verifiable.

Common Local Tree Species

Ocean County's Coastal tidal marsh soils supports 6 dominant species across Point Pleasant. Growth rates, root depth, and failure patterns vary significantly, accurate species identification drives every arboricultural decision.

Point Pleasant & Point Pleasant Beach Tree Removal Permits

Two boroughs, two permit tracks. Point Pleasant Borough runs its tree work under Chapter 13 (Removal of Trees, added by Ord. 2024-12 adopted 5/13/2024 under the NJDEP MS4 statewide stormwater rule) — a permit is required for any street tree or non-street tree 6 inches DBH or greater. Fines run $250 per tree for a first offense and $500 per tree for subsequent violations. Point Pleasant Beach Borough is separate: its Shade Tree Commission (Chair, 5 members, 2 alternates, plus a Council Liaison, meeting 7 p.m. the 1st Monday of the month at the Municipal Building, 416 New Jersey Avenue) reviews all tree work applications, with the underlying code (Chapter 3, Shade Trees & Shrubs) replaced by Ord. 2024-24 adopted 10/1/2024 and §3-24 (Tree Removal/Replacement) amended by Ord. 2025-23 adopted 8/19/2025. Both implement the NJDEP MS4 rule. Note: the Beach's Shade Tree Commission has publicly flagged Bradford Pear as unacceptable for street-tree replacements. Applications are on file with the borough clerk. We identify which track your job runs under before we quote; the permit itself remains the property owner's responsibility per our standard terms.

Permits in Point Pleasant are the property owner's responsibility per our standard terms, but Pro-Stump Tree Service will walk you through the local requirements and provide the arborist reports and documentation your application needs, so your project stays in full compliance.

Common Questions from Point Pleasant, NJ Homeowners

Yes — same crew, same 24/7 line for both. Point Pleasant Borough (18,941 residents, along the Manasquan River and the Point Pleasant Canal) and Point Pleasant Beach (4,766 residents, on the Barnegat Peninsula from Jenkinson's Boardwalk down to Manasquan Inlet). We work the whole Route 88 / Route 35 corridor every week.

A mature pine, red oak, or red maple on a normal residential lot runs $600–$2,600. Waterfront Point Pleasant Canal lots requiring crane access, or barrier-beach tight-setback lots on the boardwalk approach in Point Pleasant Beach, push $2,500–$5,000. Every quote is line-item, in writing, with the arborist report and insurance certificate before we start.

For anything 6 inches DBH or greater, yes. Chapter 13 (Removal of Trees), added by Ord. 2024-12 adopted 5/13/2024, requires a permit for street trees and non-street trees at the 6-inch DBH threshold. Fines are $250 per tree for a first offense and $500 per tree for subsequent violations. We prepare the paperwork; the permit itself stays the property owner's responsibility.

Point Pleasant Beach runs a separate track — its Shade Tree Commission (Chair, 5 members, 2 alternates + Council Liaison) reviews every application and meets the 1st Monday of the month at 7 p.m., Municipal Building, 416 New Jersey Avenue. Underlying code: Chapter 3 (Shade Trees & Shrubs), replaced by Ord. 2024-24 adopted 10/1/2024 with §3-24 amended by Ord. 2025-23 adopted 8/19/2025. Plan around the meeting calendar. We supply the arborist report your application needs.

Eastern red cedar, Japanese black pine, London plane, American holly, and bayberry are the salt-tolerant species that hold up on the barrier-beach blocks. Move a few streets inland toward the Manasquan River side of Point Pleasant Borough and you can grow red oak, red maple, and other more typical mainland species. We can walk you through species that match your lot's exposure.

Yes — we regularly service the residential blocks between the boardwalk and the inlet, and near the Old Coast Guard Station at the Manasquan Inlet (a National Register of Historic Places listing). During the peak Jenkinson's tourist season we schedule work outside the Memorial Day–Labor Day window when possible and use low-impact equipment to keep the tourist blocks clean.

For active hazards in either borough, our typical arrival is 60–90 minutes — 24/7/365. If a tree is on power lines, we coordinate directly with JCP&L before we cut.
